Should You Buy A Farm?
I just heard an interview with Robert Shiller of the Case Shiller Home Price Index. Shiller is theorizing that this might be the time to invest in farmland.
He bases this on a few points. First, there is a worldwide shortage of food. This makes the land upon which food is grown more valuable. Second, biofuels. Apparently a lot of food crops go into the making of biofuels now, and more will be used in the future. Third, plastics. I didn't know it, but apparently there are a good number of crops that are also used in the manufacture of plastics and heaven only knows how many products are made from plastic.
So, Shiller seems to think that owning a farm might be a good investment.
Of course, investing in food futures, biofuel and plastic manufacturers stocks might also be a good investment but Shiller didn't say anything about that.
